The Second Ever Texas State Sprint Championships were held on November 23, 2002 in absolutely perfect paddling weather on Austin's Town Lake.  Attendance was lower than in 2000 when the weather was rather nasty.  Go figure.  However, a race organizer couldn't ask for a better group of 15 racers who enjoyed a great day of competition and fun that included 14 races including the famous Three Legged Willie Race.

In the men's division the two fastest men in Texas Phillipe (Blou) Blouin and Colin Grimshaw battled throughout the day.  By the narrowest of margins Blou proved to be the best both in kayak and in C-1.  Ever the showman and fashion plate, Blou came with a new blue hair job since no one can remember or pronounce his name.  Blue hair = "Blou", awww.. we get it.  Both Blou and Colin chose ICF C-1 canoes over USCA C-1 canoes. In canoe Blou chose to high kneel while Colin elected to sit and switch.  Hot on the heels of the two foreign devils were everyone's favorite Olympian white water racer Ben Kvanli (who is also kind of a foreigner too come to think of it) and junior (sort of) Joe Mayfield.  Joe, Michelle Clements and Erin Magee spent the summer training with Roger Myers which may explain why folks now see them through the windshield rather than in the rearview mirror.  Kneel at the feet of the master and be anointed as a faster paddler.

Some might have assumed that the woman's contest would be the Erin show, particularly with canoe specialists Cindy Meurer and Teddy Gray AWOL.  Erin won the first race of the day, 500 meter K1. But wait, what about Ben's lovely and fast improving bride Michelle?  Michelle showed that she came to fight by turning the tables and beating Erin in the second race of the day the 200 meter K1. Wrong again, the best woman sprint paddler proved to be Julie Morgan the Welsh Wrocket (yup, another foreigner) who scored a perfect 50 points by winning 5 individual races including, per the rules, at least one canoe race, one kayak race and one race in a tandem boat.  As was the case in the men's race, the fastest women in the state were on hand in the fastest boats.

Rachel Lamb and Joe Mayfield won the State Junior Sprint Championships.  Regrettably, they were each in a class of one but both stacked up well against the adults.  I have a hard time accepting Joe as a Junior but rules are rules, birth dates are birth dates and he's a junior.  Reminds me of a day some years ago watching two teenagers named Mike and Tim Rask rounding the bridge at Green's Bayou in a C-2 with a mob of men's C-2's dropping from sight behind them.  David Lamb and Lee Deviney will take their victories cheap thank you and were the best men veteran and masters respectively.

Newcomer Ben Kooperferstock was the best youth paddler and should develop like Alan and Joe in Camp Lamb.  The newest of the new paddlers was Cade Deviney, 4 years old and ready to rumble.  Cade permitted his father to paddle K2 bow in the 1000 and 500 meter races.  For his effort in pushing the old man along and for being the only Cadet paddler, Cade was the best cadet paddler of the day.  Brother Zane Deviney coached from the bank and should make a fine tandem partner for Cade in 2003, or maybe 2004’Ķ

Two novice (or at least pretty new) paddlers Jim Scoggin and Jimmy Doran filled out the canoe classes and displayed some developing talent.  Jim and Jimmy were also most helpful in timing the kayak races, thus allowing your reporter to enter and become cannon fodder in a few races.  If there had been an award for "cutest", most adorable and most likely to lick your face, the clear winner would have to be Joe the Puppy who teamed up with Fuzzy Churchman, Joe and a mystery paddler in the K4.   Fuzzy needs partner, Joe needs bone’Ķ.let's make a deal.

After 13 races and no need for tie breakers we sort of blew off the Index race and went straight to the famous Three Legged Willie Race.  Five paddlers answered Willie's call for the true test of overall paddling ability.  In Willie's race each paddler must race with a kayak paddle, paddle sit & switch, paddle from the canoe high kneel position and portage. Funky paddling tyechniques and haberdashery be damned any and all hats were tolerated.  "Willie calling Stockwell’Ķ.where were you big guy?"  While the three paddling disciplines are required, contestants may choose to use one or more boats.  A paddler may switch boats during a portage or may elect to carry the boat through the portage and back to the water.  Paddlers also can choose their own order of paddle styles during the race.

As expected Blou led from start to finish swapping boats after each leg.  Julie and Rachel  elected to kayak first, their fastest legs while Lee and Colin started off sit and switch.  After the first round the women were leading the men, Lee moving up behind Julie after closing on Leg #2 with Lee high kneeling and Julie sitting and switching.  Colin caught Rachel on the second leg and bore down on the missus (or is it "Mam" across the pond?).  Choosing K1 for the anchor leg Lee moved to second.  Colin and Julie finished in a dead heat.  The Englanders thought they had finished in a perfect martial tie until the race official imprudently noticed that Colin's bow was across the line a "wee" bit sooner.  Bloody hell and all that rot, the wanking ref is blind!

Finally, the Jug Award for best regional team has changed hands.  Central Texas out-pointed North Texas and also Central-Southeast Texas.  Ya'll come back next year and try to win it back.
