Release date: May 10, 2004

Forty-three paddlers in 26 canoes and kayaks participated in the tenth annual Pecan Paddle Canoe Race held the second Saturday in May. The race sponsored by the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority began in Starcke Park East and wound down river for 10 miles ending just past the FM 1117 bridge. The participants enjoyed perfect weather and excellent river conditions with the river flow at 800+ cfs. The racecourse provided an opportunity to experience both lake and river paddling and practice portaging techniques.

The annual event is made possible through combined community support and gives both locals and out-of-town visitors an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Guadalupe River in the Seguin area.

According to race coordinator, Dwight Peschel, Allen Ognoski of GBRA helped in sponsoring the event. Rick Robbins of the Seguin Outdoor Learning Center provided canoes, kayaks and equipment; Steve Koehler and Harry Hull of the Koehler Company allowed use of their mill for making the plaques; and Sherry Nefford of the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce donated pecans for the paddlers. Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Department again assigned two of the river patrol deputies, Todd Friesenhahn and Mark Miller, to help assure the safety of the paddlers.

The start location in Starcke Park East was again mowed and prepared by the City of Seguin Parks and Recreation Department under the direction of Tim Patek. GBRA mowed the portage areas on Nolte Island. The finish is located on a gravel bar owned by Susan and Dale Dyess, which they mowed.

Each team received an eastern red cedar wood plaque, and each paddler received a T-shirt and bandana with the race logo. Race results by class and times were as follows (hours:minutes:seconds):
